Weekly Post, Times-Journal merge

Published February 23, 2010

DeKalb County’s two most decorated newspapers over the past 20 years joined Tuesday as Southern Newspapers, Inc. officials announced the Times-Journal and the Weekly Post will merge.

Thursday marks the final edition of the Weekly Post, a newspaper that has served the Sand Mountain community for more than 26 years. The popular Sand Mountain Shopper will continue to circulate weekly throughout the communities on Sand Mountain, providing a one-of-a-kind information and advertising source.

The Weekly Post has consistently been honored by the Alabama Press Association as one of the best weekly newspapers in Alabama.

“The merger is only the beginning of the great things to come” said Weekly Post Editor and Publisher Rebecca Long, who will stay with the company to help with the transition. “We will be working together to make sure that the transition is smooth and successful for the community.”

Wednesday marks the final day of business, and the company anticipates selling or leasing its property on Highway 75, near the Rainsville Police Department.

Beginning Saturday, Weekly Post subscribers will begin receiving issues of the Times-Journal. That will continue through the length of individual subscriptions, allowing readers to increase from one issue a week to five at no additional cost.

All Weekly Post news, advertising, circulation and business operations will immediately move to the Times-Journal.

“We are so excited to being given the opportunity to expand our Sand Mountain commitment to our readers, our advertisers and the communities we have served for more than 100 years,” Times-Journal Editor and Publisher J.D. Davidson said. “Now, it seems – more than ever – DeKalb County needs to take advantage of the combined strengths of each of our unique, dedicated and important communities to continue our aggressive push forward. The Times-Journal is so proud to part of that growth.

“Our pledge is to continue the dedication, spirit, sense of community and activism that came through each week on the pages of the Weekly Post in the Times-Journal. We have a lot to live up to, but we are anxious to bring DeKalb County closer than ever.”

The Times-Journal expects to quickly expand its editorial and advertising coverage of Sand Mountain, beginning with increased daily, dedicated space for news items from the Sand Mountain area, Davidson said. Also, advertisers will be able to take advantage of the expanded reach of the Times-Journal and times-journal.com.

“This combination works amazingly well for the Times-Journal and the Weekly Post as businesses, but more importantly it gives us the ability to give our friends and neighbors in the DeKalb County business community an incredibly efficient, reliable, respected and effective way to get their message to a growing list of potential customers,” Davidson said. “We need to work together as businesses as we emerge from one of the most difficult economic times in our history. We couldn’t be happier to play such an important role in DeKalb County’s economic development.”
