The Alabama Teachers Credit Union recently sponsored a contest in which students could nominate their teacher to receive $200 worth of school supplies in a promotion called "Cater to the Classroom."
Each branch (Gadsden, Fort Payne, Albertville, Centre) drew one entry from their box and Plainview fourth-grader Nathan Moore was this area's winner.
"The students filled out the paper and had their teacher to write a list of needed supplies and sign it," said Dottie Whitten, manager of the Fort Payne branch of the ATCU.
Last Tuesday, Whitten and Gadsden branch manager Candy Elrod visited Linda Smith's classroom, where Moore is a student.
Elrod arrived first, bringing a bag full of supplies, including a small boom box to replace one that quit working. She also had everything from sharpies to tacky glue.
As each item was presented, the pupils cheered.
"With these hard economic times, I want to thank the credit union for this," Smith said. "Senator Lowell Barron gave each teacher $50 this year but that is all we've received, so this is a Godsend."
When Whitten arrived, it was with another surprise for the youngsters — pizza and drinks.
To enter the contest, a child's parents had to be members of the credit union.
"We had a lot of entries at each location," Elrod said.
Other members of Mrs. Smith's class include (in alphabetical order): Akita Anglin, Elijah Bradley, Trevor Carson, Abby Casey, Jacob Cowart, Blake Granadoes, Allison Garrett, David Jones, Michael King, Adaly Limon, Kevin Luna, Noah Mince, Mark Mitchell, Amy Prestwood, Raven Rasberry, Dixie Reed, Clancey Rice, Sarah Royal, Jarrett Sanford, Carly Sarratt, Kaitlyn Shankles, Anthony Subias, Isabella Thomas, Alison Venable, and Elijah White.
