Juvenile burglars arrested with knives

Published August 7, 2008

SYLVANIA—A group of juveniles were arrested recently after the discovery of several knives in their possession led to the discovery of burglary and vandalism. Most shocking of all is that the ages of those involved were as low as 11 and 8 years old.

Sylvania police received a tip from one of the boys’ guardians saying the child had come home with several knives in his possession. When Sylvania officer John Seals investigated, it was determined that two 11-year-olds, a 14-year-old and an 8-year-old child were involved in a burglary.

According to police, the boys broke into an old store building, vandalized it and broke into a safe containing cash, guns and knives.

Seals was unable to immediately account for the guns which were supposedly missing, and contacted Sylvania Police Chief Brad Gregg for backup.

“We got the juveniles responsible together,” said Gregg. “The 8-year-old was basically forced into the act by threats from the others. He didn’t really understand what he was getting into and he will likely not be charged.”

A 16-year-old was given money by the younger kids and will be charged with Receiving Stolen Property Third Degree. An adult was involved as well. However, according to Gregg, is unlikely to be charged.

“The 19-year-old man was given some of the money but was unaware of its source,” said Gregg.

Police stated that the juveniles admitted to having entered the building multiple times. One of the 11-year-olds and the 14-year-old allegedly went into the building twice in one day, and will likely be charged with two counts of burglary.

“The other 11-year-old admitted to going in numerous times,” stated Gregg, “and will be charged with several counts of burglary.”

The boys had made off with a shotgun, 2 BB guns, binoculars, and anywhere from 100 to 200 knives, as well as quite a bit of money in the form of old silver dollars, half dollars, quarter rolls and some cash.

According to police, most of the items were recovered and returned. The juveniles were taken into juvenile custody.
