At last Tuesday's DeKalb County commission meeting, county engineer Ben Luther gave an update on the remaking of Sylvania Gap Road and the report was good.
Most of the roadbed has been completed, with only a small section left to fill in.
The last 4 feet of the roadbed will be dense-graded base material.
Luther said that he expects the bed to be complete in about two weeks.
Soon after that, paving can begin and the guardrail can be reconstructed.
"The hardest part is going to be scheduling the paving," Luther said. "The weather will play a big part in how quickly the paving gets done — and I know the paving company has other projects going on."
Air and ground temperature have a lot to do with paving, according to Luther. He said that anything less that 40 degrees doesn't work well.
Commissioner Chris Kuykendall asked Luther if having the road ready to go in 60 days was feasible.
"I think it can be done in less than 60 days, if there is no major catastrophe," Luther said.
• The commission also hired Lisa Long as a part-time library bookmobile employee.
• Renewed its contract with Pitney Bowes to keep postage machines in county buildings.
• Gave authorization for Morton Associates to handle the administration and for LADD Engineering to handle the engineering to supply water to about 250 residents on Lookout Mountain, south of Collinsville. A grant will pay for work.
