North Sand Mountain's Farmer's Market held a chili cook-off on Saturday, Jan. 16, at the Tom Bevill Enrichment Center in Rainsville.
The event is scheduled to be an annual event, with this being the inaugural affair.
There were six teams in the contest that was judged by a mixture of attributes, including color, aroma, consistency, taste, and aftertaste.
The winner of first prize was The Chili Dogs' vegetarian chili. Mimi and John Anderson of Rainsville won the event with their dish.
Second place was One World Adventure company of Mentone, presented by William and Angie Shugart.
The other participants were Larry Johnson and Alethia Beall with Sheerlark Farm, Hamm Radio Club with Barbara Petrie, and Cowart's Honey of Rainsville, presented by Jerry and Peggy Cowart. The Chili Dogs also entered a beef chili into the contest.
The Chili Dogs' vegetarian chili won the people's choice award as well. For their award, they received a jar of hot dried peppers and market bucks to use at the Farmer's Market.
After the chili cook-off, the board members and market vendors presented a homemade supper including soup, bread, cookies, and pies.
The Saturday Sylvania market will re-open in April and the Mentone market is open year-round on Wednesdays from 2 p.m. until dark.
