Allen
Elbert Leon Allen, 90, of Fort Payne, formerly of Higdon, passed away Friday, Jan. 8, 2010, at Shepard's Cove, surrounded by his loving family.
Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 11, at Corner Stone Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Melvin Dawson officiating. Burial followed in Pisgah with military honors.
Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Elizabeth and Frank Henagar of Fort Payne and Lila Jean and Larry Pangle of Tenton; grandchildren, Pamela and Jason Smith and Treva Allen; and great granddaughter, Lilly Smith.
Mr. Allen was a veteran who served in the Army during World War II.
Avans
Mr. Robert Avans, of Chattanooga, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010.
Mr. Avans was born in Chattanooga to Alton and Hazel Avans. He was of the Baptist faith and retired from Combustion Engineering after 41 years as a draftsman. He will always be remembered as a caring husband, father and grandfather and as being talented as a heavy machine operator.
Robert is survived by his wife of 35 years, Nina R. Avans; children, Debbie Gates of Harrison, Danny Avans of Raleigh, NC , Jeffrey White of Hixson, Tenn., and Cathy Gordon of Chattanooga, Tenn.; grandchildren, Emily Avans, Aaron Avans, Cody White and Chad Clayton; and sister, Mary Joe Barrintine.

Brown
Mr. Herbert Brown, 80, of Pleasant Hill, passed away Sunday, Jan. 10, at DeKalb Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 12, at Rainsville Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Edwin Dean and the Rev. Hoyt Gilbert officiating. Burial followed in Mountain View Memory Gardens.
Survivors include three brothers, Milton Brown of Rainsville, Clyde Brown of Fyffe and Fred Brown of Fyffe; one sister, Pansy Gilliland of Ohatchee; a host of nieces and nephews; and special friend, Marie Lowe of Fyffe.
Mr. Brown was preceded in death by his wife, Roxie Brown; parents, Charlie and Reba Brown; and brothers, C.B. Brown and Ray Brown.
Buckner
Miss Edith A. Buckner, 87, of Flat Rock, passed away Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010, at Cumberland Health Care.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 12, at Bethlehem Baptist Church with Bro. Dean Johnson and Bro. Robert Elliott officiating. Burial followed in Overlook Cemetery with Corner Stone Funeral Chapel in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include sisters-in-law, Lillie Buckner of Flat Rock and Tena Hayes of Rosalie; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Miss Buckner was a life-long member of Bethlehem Baptist Church.
Carroll
Mrs. Gail McDow Carroll, 62, of Rossville, Ga., passed away Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010, at Hutchenson Medical Center in Fort Oglethorpe, Ga.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 7, at W.T. Wilson Funeral Chapel. Burial followed in Beulah Cemetery.
Survivors include her daughter, Kim Bodnar of Chattanooga; son, Shelane Carroll of Ringgold, Ga.; brothers, Raymond McDow of Bremen, Ga., and Dale McDow of Collinsville; and grandchildren, Jordan and Kailee Bodnar.
Mrs. Carroll was preceded in death by her husband, Martin Carroll; sister, Jean Kiker; and brother, Billy McDow.
Gail was a member of Beulah Baptist Church.
Gilbert
Mrs. Ilona Austin Gilbert, 67, of Grove Oak, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010, at DeKalb Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 7, at W.T. Wilson Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Charles Bishop officiating. Burial followed in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.
Survivors include her husband, Howard Gilbert of Grove Oak; son, Keith Gilbert of Fyffe; daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Greg Wigley of Rainsville, Angela and Frankie Strickland of Fyffe and Traci and Brian Buster of Fyffe; and grandchildren, Paul Gilbert, Whitney and Caleb Wigley, Tony, Luke and Tyler Strickland, Taylor, Madison and Austin Buster.
Mrs. Gilbert was preceded in death by her parents, Tint and Lily Mae Austin; and sisters, Leola Penrod, Gilberta Gribble and Virginia Austin.
Mrs. Gilbert was a loving and caring wife and mother. She will be missed greatly by her family until they meet her again in heaven.
Godwin
Mr. Winford Godwin, 69, of Grove Oak, passed away Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, at his residence.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan. 13, at W.T. Wilson Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Wendell Godwin and the Rev. Dennis Mitchell officiating. Burial followed in Piney Grove Cemetery.
Survivors include sons and daughter-in-law, Dennis L. and Dianne Godwin of Grove Oak and Jeffery L. Godwin of Grove Oak; sisters and brother-in-law, Peggy Evans of Langston and Corene and Dwight Rains of Centre; brothers and sisters-in-law, Windell and Irene Godwin of Grove Oak, Bobby Godwin of Center Point and Billy and Bonnie Godwin of Five Points; four grandchildren; one great grandchild; and special friend, Ann Fricks Godwin of Grove Oak.
Mr. Godwin was a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church.
Gore
Mr. Willis Lee Gore, 80, of Flat Rock, passed away Sunday, Jan. 10, 2010, at Memorial Hospital. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan. 13, at Corner Stone Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dwight Millican and the Rev. Edward Emerson officiating. Burial followed in Bethlehem Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Virginia Childress Gore; daughter and son-in-law, Regina and Joshua Benoit Christopher of Trenton; brother, Malcolm Gore of Rome; sister, Iva Strickland of Trenton; daughter-in-law, Julie West; grandchildren, Dorinda and Dewayne Moon, Danny and Stephanie West, Benji and Chasity Johnson and Chevy Christopher; and nine great grandchildren.
Mr. Gore was retired from Wheland Foundry.
Hicks
Mr. Jeffie Jeryl Hicks, 77, of Rainsville, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010, at DeKalb Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 8, at W.T. Wilson Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Gary Haymon and the Rev. Mike Dover officiating. Burial followed in Straight Creek Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Katherine Chambers Hicks of Rainsville; daughters, Teresa Simmons of Florida and Donna McCaleb of Tennessee; and grandchildren, Anthony and Diana McCaleb, Samantha Simmons and Brian McCaleb.
Mr. Hicks was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Lillie Hicks; sisters, Opal Thomas, Evelyn Dover, Gwendola Mitchum, Helen Horsely and Willie Joe Simpson; and brothers, Audry Hicks and Beryl Hicks.
Holman
Mr. Lawrence Arthur Holman, 88, of Flat Rock, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010, in Flat Rock.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 8, at Flat Rock Baptist Churhc with the Rev. Raymond Blevins officiating. Burial followed in Flat Rock Methodist Cemetery with Corner Stone Funeral Chapel in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Diana and Bobby Shrader of Flat Rock and Donna and Jeff Dotson of Michigan; daughter, Deborah Hordos of Michigan; son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Fran Holman of Michigan; several grandchildren; and special friends, Lori Burton, Tim Graben and John Elders.
Mr. Holman was born in Canada and served in the Army during World War II. He was a Mason and a member of Flat Rock Baptist Church and the American Legion. He retired from the Detroit Free Press as a printer.
McAnelly
Mrs. Dollie W. McAnelly, 72, of Rainsville, passed away Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, at Marshall Medical Center in Boaz.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan. 6, at W.T. Wilson Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Tony Pope and the Rev. Melvin Dawson officiating. Burial followed in Town Creek Cemetery.
Survivors include her husband, James B. McAnelly of Rainsville; daughters and sons-in-law, Beverly and David Payne of Rainsville, Charlotte M. Gordon of Pisgah, Cassandra M. and Charles Miller of Fyffe and Belinda McAnelly of Huntsville; sisters and brothers-in-law, Opal and Roy Chandler of Rainsville, Dorothy and Everette Wallace of Rainsville, Carolyn and Doyle Edmondson of Rainsville, Nell and Bob Dornhecker of Rainsville and Brenda and Danny Manning of Rainsville; brother and sister-in-law, Jimmy and Rosia Wells of Rainsville; 10 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Mrs. McAnelly was preceded in death by her son, Douglass McAnelly, her parents, Charles and Eula Wells; and brother, Charles E. Wells.
Miller
Mr. James Miller Sr., 69, of Flat Rock, passed way Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010, at his residence.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Kathern Evans Miller; son and daughter-in-law, Randall and Tresca Miller of Flat Rock; granddaughter, Chelsea Miller of Flat Rock; brothers, Jimmy Miller, Dawson Miller, Jerry Miller, Don Miller and Dewayne Miller, all of Fort Payne, and Dennis Jo Miller of Piedmont; sisters, Betty Jo McKelvey of Frot Payne, Jeanette Hodges of Blake and Linda Lou Miller of Fort Payne.
Pruett
Mr. Merle Pruett, 60, of Section, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2009, at Huntsville Hospital.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 9, at Section Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Shannon Williams officiating. Burial followed in Piney Grove Cemetery.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Ginger and Rick Hawkins of Section and Lindsay and Nathan Durham of Scottsboro; one son and daughter-in-law, Casey and Renee Pruett of Pisgah; six grandchildren, Jessie Clark, Taylor Clark, Tott Hawkins, Frannie Hawkins, Jasmine Gilbert and Kattie Durham; and brothers and sisters, Joan Gist, Darrell Pruett, Gail Carson and Renae Townson.
Mr. Pruett was preceded in death by his parents, Coleman and Helen Pruett.
Behind a record breaking performance by Merle Pruett in 1969, the Section High School basketball team became the Alabama State Champions. In the state finals, Pruett led the Lions to a 78-58 victory against a much taller and stronger U.S. Jones team with 47 individual points. Pruett set three scoring records: most points with 47, most field goals in one game with 17 and the most points in a tournament with 80. Pruett was named to the all state tournament team and was also awarded the top individual award of the tournament, the most valuable player trophy.
Saffels
Miss Maxine Saffels, 89, formerly of Rosalie, passed away Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, at Crowne Health Care.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan. 6, at Corner Stone Funeral Chapel. Burial followed in Rosalie Cemetery.
Survivors include sisters, Morene Phillips of Ider and Grace Saffels of Rosalie; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Miss Saffels was preceded in death by her parents, John and Pearl Saffels, and her sister, Evelyn Hardeman.
She retired in the 1970s from civil service employment in Washington, D.C., where she had worked at the Pentagon and with the Department of the Air Force.
Silver
Mrs. Thelma Fay Silver, 97, of Henagar, passed away Friday, Jan. 8, 2010, in Collinsville Health and Rehab.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Jan. 10, at Kerby Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Herman Pair officiating. Burial followed in Henagar Community Cemetery.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Virginia and Leon Jenkins of Henagar; grandchildren, Deborah Jenkins of Henagar, Thomas and Sandy Jenkins of Trussville and Donna and Tim Rogers of Pisgah; three great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; and sister-in-law, Betty Silver of Henagar.
Mrs. Silver was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Silver, and daughter, Edna King.
Mrs. Silver was a charter member of Lee's Chapel Baptist Church in Henagar.
The family would like to say thank you to all their special friends at Collinsville Healthcare and Rehab for the wonderful care they gave Mrs. Silver.

Mr. Willie M. "Bill" Tillman, 73, of Pisgah, passed away Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010, at Huntsville Hospital.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 12, at Corner Stone Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Jeff Watkins officiating. Burial followed in New Hope Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Sally Avans Tillman; daughter and son-in-law, Liz and Mike Graben of Henagar; son and daughter-in-law, William and Christine Tillman of Pisgah; 21 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; and one great great grandchildren; brothers, Leonard Tillman of Ider, Earl Tillman of Flat Rock and Edward Tillman of Foley; sister, Ruby Best of Kentucky; and very special pet, Oreo.
Tipton
Mrs. Ruthie Mae Tipton, formerly of Chattanooga, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010, at Flat Rock.
Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 8, at Corner Stone Funeral Chapel. Burial followed in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Survivors include her daughter, Elaine Vitetoe of Lexington, Ky.; sons and daughters-in-law, Wiley Lee and Edith Tipton of Flat Rock, James "Pete" and Brenda Tipton of Tiftonia; sisters, Ruby Dollar, Nancy Hollingsworth and Florence Dollar, all of Odenville, and Beulah Neal of Prattville; grandchildren, Jeff Tipton, Rodney Tipton, Sherry Tucker, Scott Vitetoe, Sean Vitetoe, Craign Tipton and Brent Tipton.
Mrs. Tipton was a member of Wauhatchie United Methodist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star, 483 Lookout Valley.
