Geraldine wins county title again

Published October 16, 2009

For the seventh straight year (and 10th in 11 years), Geraldine has won the DeKalb County Volleyball Tournament.

The Bulldogs were pushed by Plainview this year, however, and both coaches feel the strong tournament competition will help during the playoffs, which started Monday.

"Plainview pushing us really made us rise to the occasion," Bear coach Cristie Brothers said. "They're as good as any team we've played this year."

In the championship match, Geraldine downed the Bears 25-22, 25-22.

In the first game, the Bulldogs went from 11-10 to 15-11 then cruised to a 24-19 margin. The Bears, however, wouldn't allow the winning point without a fight.

The second game saw similar circumstances but the Geraldine lead was stretched from 12-10 to 16-12. The Bulldogs scored match point at 24-18, only to see it dwindle.

"It was our goal to win," said Plainview coach Skyla Gray. "But getting this far and playing this tough against Geraldine will help our confidence. It will help tremendously next week."

The Bulldogs also beat the Bears in the winners' bracket final, by a 25-19, 25-17 margin.

Geraldine started the tournament with a 25-9, 25-8 win over Sylvania and a 25-13, 25-15 victory over Fort Payne.
