Sales tax holiday for school supplies begins

Published July 31, 2008

DEKALB COUNTY—School is just around the bend. One can tell for sure because this weekend is the 2008 Sales Tax Holiday in Alabama. The purpose for these tax exemptions is to help working families get the clothing and school supplies they need for their children at cheaper than normal prices.

The tax holiday is observed by most DeKalb County municipalities. These include Fort Payne, Rainsville, Collinsville, Crossville, Ider and Valley Head.

DeKalb County Administrator Matt Sharp stated that the normal county sales tax is 1 percent. “They'll save 4 percent from the state, and a little more from the municipality they're shopping in,” explained Sharp. “The city of Fort Payne, for example, has a 3 percent tax. Rainsville's is 4 percent. It'll save the consumer, most likely, 7 to 9 percent depending on what town they're in. On a $100 purchase, that'd be about $8."

DeKalb County Revenue Department’s Carol Brooks stated that the tax-exempt period begins at 1 a.m. tomorrow and ends at 12 a.m. on Sunday, August 3. "The county sales tax resolution refers to non-commercial purchases school clothing and supplies," explained Brooks.

For a more complete list of what is and is not tax exempt during this period, you can check the official State of Alabama Department of Revenue website at www.revenue.alabama.gov/salestax/SalesTaxHol.htm.
